Dental Implants in Doylestown by Dr. Larry Stone
Dental implants offer a permanent solution to replacement teeth
Dental implants provide a more permanent alternative to dentures for the replacement of missing teeth. They are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that are permanently affixed and look, feel and function like natural teeth. The person who has lost teeth regains the ability to eat virtually anything and can smile with confidence, knowing that his or her teeth appear natural and that facial contours will be preserved. At Laurence H. Stone, DDS we offer implants by Nobel Biocare, the world's leader in innovative restorative and esthetic dental solutions.
These implants are man-made artificial tooth roots typically made from titanium, the same material used in artificial knee and hip replacements. The implants are placed into the jawbone where teeth are missing. The bone bonds with the titanium, creating a strong foundation for artificial teeth. In addition, implants can help preserve facial structure, preventing the bone deterioration that occurs when teeth are missing.
How do you know if dental implants are right for you?
If, like many others, you feel implant dentistry is the choice for you, we ask that you undergo a dental/radiographic examination and health history at our office. During these consultation visits, your specific needs and considerations will be addressed by either Dr. Stone or by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or Periodontist referred by our practice. Your questions and concerns are important to us and our team will work with you very closely to help make the procedure a success. As a Master in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Stone remains current in all the latest procedures relating to implant dentistry to ensure the most favorable outcomes.
The procedures Dr. Larry Stone follows to place or restore dental implants and replacement teeth
Dental implants are man-made artificial tooth roots that are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implants that protrude through the gums. These posts provide stable anchors for artificial replacement teeth.
For most patients, the placement of dental implants involves two surgical procedures. First, implants are placed within your jawbone. For the first three to six months following surgery, the implants are beneath the surface of the gums, gradually bonding with the jawbone. You should be able to wear temporary dentures and eat a soft diet during this time. At the same time, Dr. Stone designs the final bridgework or denture, which will ultimately improve both function and aesthetics.
After the implant has healed in the jaw, the second phase begins. Dr. Stone will uncover the implants and attach a small healing collar after which he can then start making your new teeth. An impression must be taken. Then posts or attachments can be connected to the implants. The replacement teeth are then made over the posts or attachments. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life.
In the case of upper or lower denture replacement, implants are affixed to a prefabricated frame that is then positioned into the jaw. In the case of lower denture replacement, implants can be put in place in an hour. Upper denture replacement can take one to two days! Patients will need to be careful eating for a short time, but for the most part, suffer little to no discomfort. Be sure to ask us about this exciting new technology if you think it would be appropriate for you.
